Shining Cliff Woods Races - 2010

SHINING CLIFF WOODS FELL RACES : AMBERGATE, DERBYSHIRE

LOCATION: www.multimap.com - then type in DE56 2EL

Ambergate is a village on the A6 north of Belper with the junction of the A610 to Nottingham. The race HQ is the Hurt Arms which will open for registration at 11am until 11.40am. The pub has good Sunday lunches available afterwards.

Each race starts at 12 noon and the start of the 1st race is about 800m away whilst the other 2 races start a mile away...so please allow plenty of time.

The courses are all in Shining Cliff Woods by kind permission of the Forestry Commission and, for the first race, the Grith Volunteers. Parts of the Woods are a Site of Scientific Interest (SSSI) and so need to be avoided. The Woods are an ideal place for a family walk, especially during the bluebell season.

All events are all registered with the FRA (Fell Runners Association), an organisation well worth joining for the £12 a year fee, even for their quarterly magazine and annual race diary alone.

The dates for 2010 are Sundays 11 January, 4 April and 6 June

Just like to say a big thank you for today. It was my first fell race and cannot wait to get another one under my belt. Amazing how quick you manage to get the results online PH

We had great fun doing the race and hope to make it along to one of the later ones in 2010 AB

Great thanks.  Superb conditions and I actually appreciated the shorter course. Very fast BC

There is always someone who turns up just as we are about to start...but they are just as welcome!!!!!

Relaxing before the start

Two newcomers, one of whom wrote afterwards to express his enjoyment of the event despite the snow and chill wind and that he will return.....on a warmer Easter Sunday

What Competitors Thought About the Race - January 2009:

  • Many thanks for a great event - I did one of your races about 4 years ago, and having returned to the UK decided I should pick up where I left off, and wasn't disappointed! CB
  • I really enjoyed my first fell race - it was a very special day for me as i had a heart transplant in 2006. I've been running ever since KH
  • Excellent event again, thoroughly painful at the time but the great atmosphere & organisation makes for a really good race NB
  • Big thanks also for organising the event, we all had a great time even though it took some of us a while to get round! ML
  • Great race today. Ideal conditions M
  • This was my first fell race, and I've learned that I need to practice going down the hills! I was happy with my performance on the climbs and level parts, but how do the others run so fast downhill on uneven ground? Maybe they have no fear of a twisted ankle! I
  • A great event, lovely place, nicely organised - can't actually think of any improvement, other than to put it on more often!! SC
